Although she exhibited an artistic bent at an early age and dabbled in drawing throughout her life, Janice didn't begin to seriously explore painting until she retired in 1996. At that time she began studying, taking formal classes and workshops, and learning to use the various media - acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil, and oil. She studied with the late Norma Roy for several years and currently is a member of the Studio dei Leoni group, under the direction of Libby Johnson. Janice has also benefitted from the encouragement and generous critiques of her sister and well-known artist, Barrie Van Osdell.

Janice and her husband, Bob, have traveled extensively and the places they have visited have provided inspiration for many of her paintings. She says, “I love to evoke an image of a particular scene, and have it resonate with the viewer at an emotional level. I relish the intimacy between artist and viewer that occurs spontaneously at that moment of recognition.”

Janice currently works exclusively in oil. Her landscapes and still-lifes have been shown in various exhibits, both juried and non-juried, and have won awards. Several paintings are always on display at the Elizabethan Gallery. Janice especially enjoys portrait work. “Painting portraits can be enormously satisfying because they give so much pleasure to the client and to many generations to come,” says Janice.
